Buying Rare Museum Grade Silver at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas USA

Updated: Oct 30

Our Review of Heritage Auctions:

We give Heritage Auctions a review of 5 out 5 stars

If you are a collector of rare silver, you might want to consider attending auctions and placing bids at Heritage Auctions in Dallas, TX in The United States - HA.com. You can bid on items both virtually on your computer, by phone or in person.

We have been buying items now from Heritage for years and have to say that they are a top notch auction house.

  1. The bidding software is extremely easy to use and is very reliable and precise.

  2. Their customer service is impeccable and professional.

  3. Items are shipped in a timely fashion and arrive in tact.

  4. They notify you well in advance of when auctions that pertain to your interests are coming up.

  5. You can preview items before the live auction starts and make proxy bids in advance.

Bidding at Heritage:

We regularly bid on items at Heritage Auctions and sometimes we win and sometimes we lose. If there is a piece we are in love with, we will bid as high as we can go until it is at a price we deem way over the fair market value. In that case, someone else out there can pay too much and we will just wait to purchase the same or similar item down the road when it is a a more reasonable price.

Finding bargains at auction: Every once in a while we'll make a bid and the item we bid on has little to no interest and sells for below the range estimate given by the auction house. We love when this happens, however, it is a rarity. You have a better chance of finding bargains by placing multiple bids and hoping that some of your "low ball" bids hit.

Advise and Pointers to bidders:

  1. Make sure to account for the buyer's premium. Heritage is pretty good at displaying the net combined price that includes the buyer's premium, but you need to keep aware of this extra premium.

  2. Budget a little extra for shipping. This is not Amazon Prime where shipping is free. If you buy an item be prepared to budget another 5-10% extra for shipping. If it is a larger item budget 10-20% extra for shipping. Everything is impeccably packed and shipped, but you are paying a premium for this.

  3. Don't get emotional when bidding. Be prepared to walk away if the item goes through the roof due to some over zealous and excited bidding. There will almost always be another one that comes along - even if a few years or decades later.

  4. Have an APC battery back up on your computer. If the power goes out and you lose out on an item because of this, you'll hate yourself for not having had that back up battery. (This actually happened to me once.)

Conclusion:

Definitely add bidding at auction at HA.com to your tool chest of collecting rare and museum quality silver items. You will not regret it!

The below gallery shows an actual shipment from Heritage we received on 9-28-23. I was skeptical about having paid $688 for shipping my items in, but after I received the huge box and saw how well packed it was, I had no more qualms about possibly being overcharged.
